My organ donation was not a heart....
Yes! I got your attention.. did you Google my title question????
The answer is "NO" for those of you are curious......hehehe!
Instead of a heart donation whilst still being alive, you CAN donate one kidney or a part of your liver & change someone's life forever. This is my story...
Firstly: Some stats that might shock you:
Around 1,700 people are currently waitlisted for a transplant.
A further 12,000 people are on dialysis of whom many would benefit from a kidney transplant.
In 2019, 10,310 people received a tissue or tissue-based product transplant from 4,147 tissue donors, including:
- 3,504 living tissue donors
- 312 deceased tissue donors
There were also a record 1,508 eye donors and 2,414 corneal transplants — more than twice as many as there were in 2009.
Since 2009, more than 21,500 Australians have received a corneal transplant.
Organ donation occurs when organs are removed from a donor and transplanted into someone who is very ill or dying from organ failure.
It can involve the:
- large intestine
So enough of stats and facts-what has this to do with you and me?
15 years ago I was honoured to be told that I was a match for someone who was very dear to me & who was sadly extremely ill with renal failure at a very young age.
Was I afraid leading up to the surgery? Yes, at times I was very apprehensive- I was told the pain would be pretty bad but, for the most part, I was able to cope with it because of the good medical care.
We did the successful surgery on 24th November 1995- I was 50 years old, he was 23 years old. I was half his height!
Excitingly, 15 years later our 2 families are going to have a celebration 2 days "breakcation" together for our "kidneyversary" with fun & food & fellowship- I am so excited to be gifted this celebration time of our 2 families celebrating such good health and such a great outcome!!!
More than that, I am so very grateful & blessed to have given a gift to this young man & his young family to be healthy and grow together.. ..for them to have a real family life, full of promise and experiences.
I have absolutely no regrets, just a grateful heart.
Now it is my turn to ask you: Are you on the organ donation register?? You cannot take them with you so why not act today and register: https://donatelife.gov.au/register-donor-today
Did you know that even if you register your family can reverse your choice?
It is very important to tell your family members that you want to organ donate as they need to make fast decisions at an emotional time and sometimes they refuse because they do not know what YOU wanted!!!
